Water airports in the islands of the Aegean and the finalization of agreements for their construction are a top priority for Hellenic Seaplanes.
Recent weeks have seen a series of meetings and discussions involving key officials from public agencies and port authorities across numerous Aegean islands. The aim is to expedite the licensing, location, and construction processes for water airport constructions in multiple harbors, in order to implement the first flight network in the Aegean Sea without delay.
As expected, discussions and developments related to the creation of a network of water airports on the islands where their construction is planned are at various stages, with the company’s action plan designed to synchronize these processes in the most effective and efficient manner.
Specifically, in November, an agreement was finalized regarding the commencement of the construction of the water airport in Tinos, with the shared goal of having it operational by the 2020 tourist season. The agreement was signed at the Tinos Town Hall, with the presence of the Mayor, Mr. Giannis Siotos, the President of the Tinos-Andros Port Fund, Mr. Georgios Santamouris, and the President and CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes S.A., Mr. Nikolaos Charalambous.
Along with the agreement, the three men conducted an extensive analysis of the necessary steps to ensure the methodical and timely construction and operation of the water airport.
The operation of the water airport in Patmos is also in its final stages, with most of the required licenses already secured, pending inspection by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s inspection team. This will cover both the facilities and equipment.
Meanwhile, the network of planned water airports across the Aegean has expanded to include the Sporades Islands, with Skopelos leading the way. Hellenic Seaplanes has been appointed as the contractor for the development of the island’s water airport. The Sporades Islands, Skiros, and their connection to Volos will form the first operational domain for hydroplanes in the Aegean, following the flight routes that will begin operating during the summer season of 2020 in the Ionian, specifically in Patras, Paxos, and Corfu.
Regarding the developments for the water airports on the Aegean Islands, the President and CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes S.A., Mr. Nikolaos Charalambous, stated:
“Awaiting the new regulatory framework from the government, which will simplify the procedures for the construction of water airports and the resumption of hydroplane flights, Hellenic Seaplanes remains committed to following its plan, with a focus on the successful deployment of the first hydroplanes in the Aegean, always setting economically and temporally feasible targets.”
