The contractor selection process for the water airport and the water field on the island has been completed, with Hellenic Seaplanes taking over their licensing and approval!
Recently, significant steps have been taken on the islands of the Northern Aegean to support seaplane flights, with three islands on track to receive the necessary approvals in less than a month.
Specifically, after Psara, Chios and Oinousses are close to receiving the green light to enable their ports to immediately welcome seaplanes, and now Lesbos will be added to the list of destinations that will accommodate seaplane travel in the Northern Aegean islands and neighboring coastal areas.
In particular, the Joint Municipal Port Fund of Lesbos has examined bids regarding the undertaking of the process for issuing the license for the Mytilene water airport, as well as the approval of two water fields in the areas of Petra and Plomari.
Hellenic Seaplanes was among the companies that submitted proposals with the prospect of undertaking the projects on the island. The outcome of the process resulted in Hellenic Seaplanes winning with their offer, and they will now include Lesbos’ infrastructure in the network of water airports and water fields they are building in Greece.
With the “seal” of the agreement, a delegation from Hellenic Seaplanes will visit the island to inspect locations and assess their suitability for the creation of the facilities. It is noteworthy that both the Municipal and Port authorities of Lesbos have played a crucial role in ensuring that the vision of bringing seaplanes to the island moves from the planning stage to actual implementation.
The foundations for a good collaboration were already laid in April 2022, when the President and CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes, Mr. Nicolas Charalambous, visited Lesbos and held meetings and reviewed plans with the Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Athanasiou, the Mayor of Mytilene, Mr. Stratis Kytelis, the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Efstratios Tzimi, and the Mayor of Western Lesbos, Mr. Taxiarchis Verros.
Regarding the approval for the ports of Chios and Oinousses, the President and CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes, Mr. Nicolas Charalambous, stated:
“In less than a month, we saw Psara, Chios, and Oinousses become ready to welcome seaplanes to their ports, and now Lesbos will be included in the licensing plan after Hellenic Seaplanes’ success in the tendering process for their infrastructure. These new developments give us many reasons to be optimistic, as we see Hellenic Seaplanes’ collaborations with municipal and port authorities, as well as the entities that make the final approval decisions, bearing fruit and functioning effectively. This will benefit the network of water airports and infrastructure, breathing life into the project of flying with seaplanes across Greece!”
