Initiated by the Mayor of Alexandroupolis, the city is starting the procedures to join the national water airport network, with discussions taking place with the representative of the Hellenic Seaplanes & Greek Water Airports association, Mr. Nicolas Charalambous, President and CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes!
The long-standing interest in establishing a water airport at the port of Alexandroupolis is now beginning to take concrete shape through the official procedures, allowing the city to acquire its own water airport.
To reach the point of initiating the necessary procedures, it is essential to designate the location of the water airport within the Port of Alexandroupolis. The Mayor of Alexandroupolis, Mr. Giannis Zamboukis, in collaboration with the administration of the Port Authority of Alexandroupolis, will discuss the potential sites for the creation of a water airport in the near future.
The Municipality of Alexandroupolis is in consultations with the partnership of Hellenic Seaplanes and Greek Water Airports regarding the process of creating a water airport. From the water airport in Alexandroupolis, flights will be made to water airports in Northern Greece, specifically in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, to islands in the North Aegean, the Sporades, and neighboring countries.
On the launch of the procedures for the creation of a water airport in Alexandroupolis, the Mayor of the city, Mr. Giannis Zamboukis, stated:
“The discussions between the municipal authorities and Mr. Charalambous, representative of the Hellenic Seaplanes and Greek Water Airports association, were particularly fruitful as we were able to immediately define the process and first steps for the licensing of the water airport at the city’s port. We firmly believe in the positive impact the establishment of a water airport in Alexandroupolis will have, both in terms of tourism and commercial development, and in upgrading the transportation options available to our residents, who will now be able to use seaplanes for their travel!”
In his statement, the President and CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes, Mr. Nicolas Charalambous, said regarding the Alexandroupolis Water Airport:
“We welcome the initiative of the Municipality to undertake the creation of the city’s water airport, which will be integrated into the broader plan for the development of a strong network of water airports in Greece, thus activating the seaplane market in our country and bringing a revitalization to the field of Greek transportation. Seaplanes will certainly bring new opportunities for our tourism, as they will enhance the brand name of the areas that will have the infrastructure to host them. We hope that the licensing process will begin soon, so that the port of Alexandroupolis will have its water airport and the famous lighthouse of the city will welcome the seaplanes… It is worth noting that the Alexandroupolis water airport project is not new for Hellenic Seaplanes and Greek Water Airports, as an approach was made back in 2018 to undertake the technical file preparation, although the project did not proceed at that time.”
The recent developments surrounding the Alexandroupolis water airport come as part of the growing activity seen recently regarding the development of water airports in Northern Greece.
