January 8, 2025

Seaplane network is expanding dynamically, bringing Insular Greece closer… 2025 marks the beginning of a new era in transportation, a broadened network offering fast and flexible seaplane connections that enhance tourism and transportation options for the Greek people…

Hellenic Seaplanes, in collaboration with the State and local authorities, is rapidly advancing the development of the seaplane network, incorporating three strategic destinations: Volos, Kalamata, and Skyros. In these areas, the basic infrastructure for seaplane approaches has been completed, and these locations are not merely transportation hubs but key points for boosting tourism and economic development at the national level. These three areas, with their strategic importance, form the foundation for the creation of a modern network that brings Greece closer together.

Strategic Role of Kalamata: A Hub for the Peloponnese, Crete, the Aegean, and the Ionian
The new seaplane infrastructure strengthens the region’s connection with the rest of coastal and insular Greece, creating fast, flexible, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. Kalamata becomes the hub that connects four seas: the Messinian Gulf, the Ionian, the Cretan Sea, and the Aegean.

This new era in transportation is expected to offer significant advantages to the city of Kalamata:

  • New Job Opportunities: The project brings new employment opportunities to the local community, both during its operation and in the management and servicing of seaplanes.
  • Increased Tourism Traffic: The ability to transport visitors directly to Kalamata from remote areas or islands will enhance the local tourism product.
  • Connection with Cruise Tourism: The development of seaplane operations creates new prospects for cruise passengers, offering them a unique opportunity to explore the broader area through fast and comfortable flights.

In his statement, the Mayor of Kalamata, Mr. Thanasis Vassilopoulos, focused on the opportunities created by the arrival of seaplanes:

“Kalamata is acquiring a new identity in transportation and tourism. The operation of seaplanes connects the Peloponnese with the larger cities and our islands, creating development opportunities and offering our citizens and visitors a unique travel experience. The future of transportation in our region begins today. Kalamata is now a protagonist in the new era of seaplanes, bringing the Peloponnese and the Greek islands closer than ever before.”

With the new developments in seaplanes in Kalamata, the Regional Governor of the Peloponnese, Mr. Dimitris Ptochos, commented:
“The inclusion of Kalamata in the seaplane network is not just a project that enhances connectivity, but also an opportunity for the overall development of our region. It opens new horizons for tourism and entrepreneurship, while creating jobs and strengthening the dynamic of the Peloponnese as a high-level destination. This initiative is an important step for the balanced development of southern Greece, with respect for the environment and a focus on sustainable development. The Peloponnese Region strongly supports any effort that brings new possibilities and prospects to our citizens and local communities.”

Skyros: The Aegean Treasure Closer Than Ever
Skyros, one of the least explored but most beautiful destinations in the Aegean, is now more accessible than ever. With the authorization of seaplane flights and its inclusion in the seaplane network, travelers will be able to enjoy quick and comfortable access to this unique and unexplored destination.

The Mayor of Skyros, Mr. Kyriakos Antonopoulos, stated:
“Skyros, an island with rich cultural and natural beauty, is now more accessible than ever. The operation of the water airport will provide new opportunities for our visitors and will significantly improve the quality of life for our residents. Skyros is gaining the place it deserves as a gateway to the Aegean, enhancing connectivity and bringing new opportunities for tourism development. With the operation of the seaplane field, we are creating the conditions for increased tourism traffic, sustainable transport, and better service for the residents and visitors of the island.”

Volos Rewrites History: A Starting Point for Seaplanes and a Gateway to the Sporades and Northern Aegean
The legendary connection of Volos to the sea, dating back to the time of the Argo, continues into the modern era with the restart of seaplane operations at its port, as amphibious aircraft previously serviced the Volos-Sporades route in 2009.

Confirming the strategic significance of the area for maritime transportation, Volos has received new authorization for seaplane services, paving the way for the development of innovative fast connectivity solutions with Skyros, Alonissos, Skopelos, and the islands of the Northern Aegean.

Regarding his belief in the seaplane project, the Regional Governor of Central Greece, Mr. Fanis Spanos, mentioned:
“The granting of the seaplane service license for the port of Volos and Skyros is an important step in strengthening the connectivity of Central Greece with the rest of Greece. This is a development project for the local communities and tourism. The Central Greece Region strongly supports initiatives that combine innovation with development.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Port Authority of Volos, Mr. Sokratis Anagnostou, commented on the key role Volos plays for seaplanes:
“The port of Volos, with its history and geographical position, is the natural link between mainland Greece, the Sporades, and the Northern Aegean. The return of seaplanes to Volos is not just an infrastructure project, but a revival of our maritime heritage and an opportunity to move into a new era of transportation. The authorization of the seaplane approach point strengthens this strategic position, bringing new opportunities for the region’s development.”

On behalf of Hellenic Seaplanes, the Director of Ground Operations Development, Mr. Polychronis Rontogiannis, stated:
“Volos is more than just a geographical choice—it is a symbol. From the Argo to the seaplanes, this city continues to make history in transportation. With an eye to the future, Hellenic Seaplanes is committed to creating a network that will connect Volos with the Sporades and the Aegean, offering speed, flexibility, and sustainable transport solutions.”

“A Network for All!” says the President & CEO of Hellenic Seaplanes, Mr. Nicolas Charalambous:
“The operation of the seaplane network in Volos, Kalamata, and Skyros marks the beginning of a new era for the country. It is not only a technological innovation in transportation but a fundamental change that improves the daily lives of citizens and creates development prospects for local communities. The seaplane network supports sustainable development, reducing reliance on traditional transport and offering environmentally friendly solutions. At the same time, it creates opportunities for new investments, strengthens entrepreneurship, and contributes to the economic revitalization of the participating areas.

Greece is moving forward, embracing innovation and capitalizing on its geographical advantages. With the seaplane network, distances shrink, options increase, and the country gains a new, attractive mode of transportation that combines speed, comfort, and experience.

The future of transportation is here, and this network is not just for the few—it’s for everyone.”
